While it can be fun, alcohol consumption is extremely dangerous. Drinking in moderation can help you feel comfortable in social situations, loosen up with your family and friends after a stressful day of work, or feel a little happier at dinner. But after a couple drinks, perhaps you’ve gotten a little bit too happy, and you’ve loosened up a little bit too much. You were drinking with some friends, but now it is getting late, and you should be getting home soon. Too many people in this situation decide to get in the drivers’ seat, believing that they are able to drive safely. Too many people in this situation end up ruining their lives and someone else’s. Drunk driving affects more than just you. Don’t let yourself or your friends ruin lives. In the future try taking turns staying sober. Next time your friends want you to drink with them, join them, but don’t drink. If you stay sober and let them drink, you will loosen up in the company of good friends. Then, at the end of the night, offer to drive your friends home. And if you are a real friend, you wont take “no” for an answer.
-Bill Minkel IVYou thought this was good?

If you are planning a night out with friends at your local bar or tavern, it is crucial that you determine who is the designated driver beforehand. Establishing a designated driver before leaving for a night out on the town will help keep everyone safe on the roads.

Driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated are leading causes of death and injury in young people. Even a few drinks is enough to affect judgment and reaction time. Often, a driver is impaired without even knowing it. Thus, determining who will be the designated driver beforehand will ensure that the driver is not intoxicated or impaired in their driving abilities.

If you do not have a someone with you willing to be your designated driver, do not get behind the wheel. Call someone to pick you up, or call a taxi service. Again, setting up a designated driver beforehand will help you avoid a situation in which you are unable to be responsible. You should never get behind the wheel after a night of drinking. If you do, you are putting your life, and other’s lives, at risk.

By taking the time to establish or find a designated driver, you are being responsible with your life and other’s.

It is never too early for parents to begin instilling good values into their children. Just as parents teach kids how to say “please” and “thank you” and how to refuse rides from strangers, they should also teach their kids about underaged drinking. Naturally, the children must be old enough to understand the concept of taking a drink. However, the lessons do not have to wait until they are in their late teenage years. Quite often children are exposed to alcohol at very early ages, even before they become teenagers.

There is no right or wrong age to begin teaching children about alcochol abuse. A good rule of thumb age is between 8 and 12, where the child understands the concept of taking in something that is not permitted. Parents should explain that even though these substances may be made available by friends, relatives, or peers, it is illegal for them to indulge. Parents may want to also go into detail about some of the adverse effects of alcohol. Pointing out some of the adverse effects of alcohol can make the experience seem a lot less glamorous to a child and perhaps he or she will be more reluctant to try it.The information party rocks on: Eight Important Things to Teach Children

If you’re constantly trying to figure out how to get your friends to give up their keys we’ve got a few suggestions.
Make Plans Ahead of Time: If possible, try to get everyone to agree to take a cab or public transportation home before you go out. If all else fails, make sure everyone gives you their keys before the alcohol starts flowing.
Agree to Be Designated Driver: If you don’t mind the responsibility go ahead and volunteer your chauffeur services before the night begins. If that doesn’t stop people from drinking and driving, nothing will.

If All Else Fails: If your friends still won’t give up their keys and get in the car to drive, call the police. It’s not worth putting everyone on the road in danger to keep your friend happy. If possible, start first with a bouncer or larger friend who can forcibly remove them from the car.

Having an honest and age-appropriate discussion about drinking with your children is an important step to teaching them to make good life choices. All kids must be aware of the dangers of drinking and must feel comfortable talking to their parents about the subject. Keep the lines of communication open by following these tips for talking to your kids about drinking responsibly.

Be Honest
Give your kids accurate, honest information. Don’t teach them that having one drink will result in irreparable damage. When they discover this is simply not true, your children will no longer trust you. Don’t use scare tactics, but calmly talk about the consequences of drinking. If you yourself drink, your children will most likely notice and ask why. Be prepared to answer honestly and explain the reasons that adults sometimes drink.

Be Open
Just because your child has questions about drinking does not mean that they themselves are consuming alcohol. Let your child know you can answer his questions and prove it by being approachable and willing to listen. Ask your child about what they know about alcohol and don’t judge their responses. Let your child know that they can always talk to you about drinking.Still bored? Click to continue: On the soapbox…

Alcoholism is not always easy to detect even in those we think we know best. Alcoholics often hide their drinking and after a period of time, their behavior may seem more like a personality defect than a drinking problem. If you are worried about a loved one, consider these points in determining if family members have alcohol addictions.

Physical Signs
Does your family member have trouble with coordination and balance? Does he or she frequently slur their speech or smell of alcohol? Do their hands tremble and are they often tired or complain of physical ailments like headaches with no known cause? These physical symptoms may be signs of an alcohol addiction.

Behavioral Signs
Does your loved one have a history of irrational behavior? Are they missing work or other important obligations as a result of their drinking? Perhaps they are easily enraged or do things they soon regret while drinking. Do they react with a defensive attitude when asked about their drinking problems? Do they admit they have an issue with alcohol? Alcoholics will often find excuses to leave events or places in search of a drink. Does your family member often have excuses for leaving gatherings early? Are they spending money they don’t have on alcohol?

The answers to these questions will enable you to assess your loved one’s possible alcohol addiction.

Watching a family member’s life spiral out of control because of a drug problem or an alcohol problem is a difficult and painful process. A loved one may want to step in, but a loved one may not know when to help. Even if he does want to step in, he can rest assured that such help will not be appreciated at first. Depriving an addict of his fix, whether is drugs or alcohol, is a dangerous thing to do . There is a reason there is often more than one person present during an intervention.Want more? Click here/tag

The time to step in is when a person’s life starts to get out of control. Waiting until the person is facing eviction, been fired from several jobs, is int trouble with the law and has been hospitalized a few times is probably too late. Even if it is not too late for the individual, more damage was done by waiting than would have been done if a person had simply intervened when he knew there was a problem.

Stepping in when a family member is abusing alcohol is not an art form. It is something that is done out of concern. If there is a chance that the drinker will ruin his health if he is let go too long, it should be done sooner rather than later.

Drinking alcohol is something that can be responsibly enjoyed by adults of legal age. When going out with friends, it is often too easy to be unsafe or drink to excess. However with a few simple steps, it is simple to enjoy alcohol safely.

Having a designated driver or alternative plans for transportation will ensure that no one will drive under the influence of alcohol. This should be determined and set up before going out for the evening. If using a designated driver, this person needs to remain sober for the evening, as it is their responsibility to get everyone home safely. You can find a quick rundown here

Setting guidelines and expectations for the evening will also help to ensure that everyone can enjoy drinking while still being safe. If friends are planning to become extremely intoxicated, then they will not be able to assist with staying safe while out. People who are like minded and want to have a good time while being responsible will help the most.

The establishment that one goes to will also help or harm ones ability to enjoy drinking safely. A bar or restaurant that is reputable is best.

Alcohol can easily be enjoyed safely as it does not have to be used in excess.
