Honest TalkThinking About Drinking?Parents at Risk
Parents at Risk—Is Your Brain Still Charged?

We parents need every brain cell we’ve got. Many of us may live a long time, so we’d better reserve some rpms for thinking. But those who are heavy social drinkers face an uphill battle: Research shows a pattern of brain damage similar to that seen in hospitalized alcoholics. It’s enough to impair day-to-day functioning.

Alcohol is the most serious public health problem on American college campuses today.

David Satcher
U.S. Surgeon General

Tests show that people who drink more than 100 drinks a month have problems in balance, reading, and other functions. The findings, reported in the Journal of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, indicate that even those of us not in treatment and functioning well in the community may have detectable brain damage.

Yes, we need every brain cell we’ve got. (Or did I say that already?)
